Ready, Set, Breakfast!

Identify Learners:
“Ready, Set, Breakfast!” is designed for 2nd grade level students currently attending Anderson Elementary School. The classroom includes 15 students within 7 to 8 years of age (8 females and 7 males). By the end of this lesson, students will learn how to identify the fat, sugar, and sodium content of the different types of cereal selected for this activity.

Accommodative Services:
To ensure reasonable accommodations are required, students with autism under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) will work closely with a cooperative learning group. Group members will be instructed to keep student on task in a timely manner for successful academic performance. For further assistance, students will be given additional class time to complete the assignment and one-on-one instruction will be provided by the teacher. If available, a one-to-one educational aide will assist.

|
First, students will be divided into 5 groups, 3 students per group. Students will get into their groups while a selected “Team Leader” will get the Handout Activity Worksheet and the cereals Nutrition Facts labels.

(30 minutes)
Activity |
Next, students will demonstrate the activity by comparing the amount of fat, sugar, and salt on each of the cereals Nutrition Facts Label. Next, groups will be communicating with the "Recordkeeper" on what to record on the activity worksheet. Students will then rank their results on which cereal is the most healthy to the least healthy.

Reflection/Discussion |
Then, students will finish up their assignment and go back to their assigned seats. As a class, each group will take turns to review their results. Students will engage in group discussion and reflect on their opinions and ideas. Team Leaders will collect the finished worksheets from each group and graded based on the assessment rubric given.

Lastly, students will listen to the Youtube video projected on the SMARTBoard projector for visual learning. The electronic visual aid/technology tool will help students fully understand the lesson during Reading time.
